12. 22. 25. is a contemplative exploration of light and color shaped by the profound significance of the winter solstice and the Advent season. Through a precise 3x3 grid of concentric squares, each painted in oil pastel on heavyweight cotton paper, I engage the viewer in a rhythmic dialogue between cold clarity and festive warmth. The color palettes—spanning vibrant blues, resolute greens, fervent reds, regal purples, and fiery oranges—are carefully chosen to evoke both the crystalline chill of midwinter air and the spirited energies of holiday celebration.
This work frames the shortest day of the year not as a moment of decline but as a potent threshold for renewal, echoing the spiritual anticipation embedded in the Advent calendar. The geometric rigor and layered hues conspire to create a visual cadence that honors the interplay of darkness and light, contraction and expansion, silence and exuberance. The experience of the work is further informed by the excitement and hopeful energy surrounding the opening night of Marty Supreme, which infuses the piece with a contemporary vibrancy amidst traditional motifs.
In composing 12. 22. 25., I was particularly drawn to how color itself can articulate seasonal energy, serving as a language that conveys both the chill of winter and the warmth of communal celebration. This artwork stands as an invitation to reflect on the enduring cycle of light’s gradual return, offering a restorative meditation on hope, transformation, and the deep resonance of time’s passage within the sacred rhythms of the year.
