This piece is from a project where I was examining art materials under the stereomicroscope to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of them. Fumage is an art technique using fire and smoke to create marks on a surface, notice how the heat permeates the paper, completely singes the fibres, causing a fissure and discolouring the surrounding area. An unbalanced equation waiting to be made whole. The symbols may change, but the values remain, a universal language bridges understanding across cultures.
