The executive writing on the wall denounces the double life of those who want to experience a moment of adrenaline after an intense week. The contradiction that makes the art: The man is completely outside his commonplace. He could easily be a vandal dressed up as an executive for Carnival. The city hall of Rio de Janeiro, my hometown, always paints the city in grey before the carnival. We call this “for foreigners to see”. They say that tourists prefer it this way, that it is only art if the City Hall authorizes it. In reality, whoever arrives first after the annual painting of the city hall becomes the “owner” of the wall until the next carnival. When I was still in Rio, writing on the walls was all that remained for me for a while. The left message was a message about the search for daily overcoming, of abandoning the past self for a new self always-seeking knowledge.
