Memory is rarely a faithful reconstruction of the past. It is fragmented, layered and shaped as much by emotion as by fact. Looking Back centres on a figure whose expression resists a single interpretation. There is regret in her gaze, but also strength, as though she has endured something that neither defeated nor released her.
Constructed from glass, paper, dried flowers and paint, the portrait contrasts fragile and enduring materials, echoing the same tension between vulnerability and resilience found in her expression. The face appears assembled from separate fragments that never quite become a single whole, suggesting that memory, like identity, is shaped from pieces that are continually reinterpreted over time.
The vertical bands in the background introduce an intriguing ambiguity. They may suggest prison bars, a window, or simply the structures through which memory is viewed. Are we looking in at her, standing beside her, or sharing the same space? The work offers no answer, inviting each viewer to bring their own experiences of longing, reflection and remembrance.
