Unresolved Balance explores the conflict between two forces that once existed among many kingdoms, until only these two remained. Having destroyed everything around them, they now stand against each other in a battle neither can truly win. Fire cannot defeat water, and water cannot completely defeat fire. Beneath the idea of kingdoms and rivalry, the painting is ultimately about the balance and conflict between these two elements. The tiger represents fire: whether it appears distant and controlled like a small flame or close and overwhelming like a wildfire, it carries an immediate sense of danger and aggression. The peacock represents water, which can appear calm, beautiful and inviting while still holding the potential to become suddenly dangerous and unpredictable. The kingdoms, people and eagles reinforce the aggression and destruction associated with fire, while the swans reflect the fluidity and calmer surface of water.
