This is an original acrylic on panel painting entitled "July 6 2021." It measures 24" X 24" and is part of my "Asterism Series" of works. The term "asterism" refers to the "X" that appears to the eye -- but does not exist in the painting -- and occurs when contiguous colors interact from light to dark or dark to light. I refer to myself as a Contemporary Op Artist, influenced by mid-century op artists such as Julian Stanczak, Josef Albers, Carlos Cruz Diez, and Richard Anuszkiewicz. My primary motivation is to explore how colors engage with and influence each other when they are in close proximity, and how color choices and design create structures, motion, and depth in the viewers' eyes. I also enjoy the role that mathematics plays in my work, and the process of layer upon layer of colors that are applied using varying widths of masking tape to create the final result -- which is something that I can't see until the last piece of tape is removed.
