Victorialand imagines an abandoned city in Antarctica built in Victorian time when the British Empire was at its height of influence and power. The city failed, as it was bound to and now stands as a monument to human overreach, the fragility of ambition, and the inevitable erasure wrought by time and nature. It forces the viewer to confront the futility of permanence in the face of elemental forces. The city in this painting is a monument to the Victorian psyche frozen in time and space, its sepulchral streets echoing with the ghostly hubris of empire.
